Define globalization and discuss how it has changed the New Zealand way of life. Include both positive and negative influences of globalization. It's an entity that is offering this world it's many advantages and dissadvantages, acting as a double egded sword cutting people in on money, power and technologies, and also cutting people out of the benefits leaving poverty, inequality and modern day slave labour. It's globalization, the most intensly debated topic in the economic community since the early 1980's. The term "globalization" came as a replacement for the likes of "internationalisation" and "transnationalisation", and it is generally used to describe the changes in societies and the world economy that result from increasing international trade and cultural exchange. In this era, goods and services produced in one part of the world are increasingly availible in all parts, information flows more quickly, global communication is common-place and international travel is more frequent. It can be noted that the global in globalisation demonstrates how our lives are intertwined with people on the other side of the world via the food we eat, the clothing we wear, the music we listen to, the information we get and the ideas we hold. From globalization comes the capital movement of four fundamental forms within the global economy. Some people see this as the process which is the key that opens the door to future world economic development. The four forms are human capital, financial capital, resource capital and power capital. These fundamentals are crucial when politicians make big decisions for a country. Policies are built around the responcibilities held by each fundamental, and issues can range from migration to resource consumption. However, globalization is not solely an economic phenomena. It is also a cross netwrok, interacting with all areas of human activity that include political, cultural, and social values. This has others meeting globalization with hostility and fear because of their belief that globalization increases inequality within and between nations, threatens local employment and living standards and disregards social progress. However, the policies created are in no way for or against globalisation, instead they are made to control and direct it to give more desirable outcomes that will benefit the nation's economy. What matters now is that societies organize themselves and that countries are "fast" rather than "slow" to make the changes necessary to take advantage of new opportunities. So how does this concern New Zealand, and what differences has it made? We can argue that the free trade agreement that is currently in discusion between New Zealand and China could posibly be a good way to go as it will bring a wide variety of potential goods, like medicines and technology, to New Zealand that could interest producers and consumers. Though the idea that cheaper goods from China may seem like a good idea, it will come with repercussions that could cause a number of undesired effects to our economy; foreign competitors could destroy local jobs, rape of resources, exploitation of cheap labour and so on. Big corporate businesses would then have access to the market and further spread their empire by dominating over local buisnesses, which could show inequality that both groups have between eachother. New Zealand's smaller economic size means that New Zealand's global exports are concentrated in fewer sectors than China's. However, in both cases improved access to the partner country's products and services have the potential to benefit both domestic consumers and producers. Stresses and complexities found in countries, communities, and the interaction between the two, can be traced back to the structure of the fundamentals. Globalization is a term that has been used since the early 80's to People around the globe are more connected to each other than ever before. Information and money flow more quickly than ever. Goods and services produced in one part of the world are increasingly available in all parts of the world. International travel is more frequent. International communication is commonplace. This phenomenon has been titled "globalization." It affects us just as much as it affects any other nation. Globalization is no longer a thing of the future, but it is a thing of the now. ______________________________________________________________________ refs http://www.eastonbh.ac.nz/article22.html http://www.arena.org.nz/globcoln.htm http://www.imf.org/external/np/exr/ib/2000/041200.htm#I http://www.minterellison.co.nz/New%20Zealand%20International%20Review.pdf http://www.eastonbh.ac.nz/article232.html http://72.14.207.104/search?q=cache:TQ2EvxgPP68J:www.educationforum.org.nz/documents/speeches/serving_everybodys_interests.pdf+how+does+globalization+concern+nz&hl=en&gl=nz&ct=clnk&cd=1&client=firefox-a http://www.pl.net/6business/forown.htm http://www.colinjames.co.nz/herald/Herald_2006/BizHerald_col_06Apr19.htm http://www.mfat.govt.nz/tradeagreements/nzchinafta/chaptertwo.html#2.1.2%20The%20New%20Zealand%20economy http://72.14.207.104/search?q=cache:WWlkCtaBFvUJ:www.vuw.ac.nz/css/docs/Working_Papers/WP21.pdf+globalization+affects+nz&hl=en&gl=nz&ct=clnk&cd=7&client=firefox-a http://www.globalenvision.org/library/3/536/ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Globalization
